In his position, Bernard is responsible for the installation, testing, and maintenance of instrumentation that controls the flow of oil and gas. His duties encompass a wide range of tasks, including repairing existing equipment, performing preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting issues as they arise. “A typical day involves not just fixing problems, but also anticipating them,” he says. Bernard emphasizes the need for quick thinking and problem-solving skills to minimize downtime and maintain production efficiency.

Bernard's journey into instrumentation began while working at a fish plant, where he observed technicians maintaining the machinery. This sparked his interest, leading him to pursue an Instrumentation and Control Technician Certificate at the College of the North Atlantic. After obtaining his Red Seal Certification, he took his expertise offshore to the oil and gas sector. To further enhance his qualifications, Bernard has completed various training courses, including fall arrest, first aid, WHMIS, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA), and Basic Survival Training for Offshore (BST).

Bernard’s work environment is dynamic and challenging. With a 21 days on and 21 days off rotation, he faces the reality of being away from home for extended periods. “While the offshore lifestyle can be tough, the experience is rewarding, and the benefits are significant,” he reflects. His day consists of hands-on work with cutting-edge technology, which requires him to stay up to date with advancements in instrumentation.
